Dining Chairs - Comfort versus Aesthetics

Oddly enough, when people look for a new set of dining chairs, comfort often comes a poor second to appearance. This is something of a pity, since your dining experience can be much a more enjoyable and relaxed affair when seated comfortably. Seat heights tend to be fairly similar, high enough to allow for the average adult to sit with their feet firmly on the floor, but not so low as to transfer all a person’s weight to their buttocks and lower back. Chair backs, however can vary widely, both in height and shape.

For chairs that are to be used at a table, there are several important aspects of the dining chairs back to take into account before you buy. One is that it should be shaped to support the lumber region and that it should have just enough slope to it to allow you to sit without being hunched forward or slouched back. Another is the height of the top rail; this should support the region from the shoulder blades to the shoulders. Any higher or lower will feel uncomfortable quite quickly, not ideal for a dinner party. The top rail itself should have a curve that approximates the shape of a human back between the shoulders.

While chairs in a formal dining room frequently have upholstered seats, this is usually not suitable for use at a kitchen table, especially where there are children, as it can be very hard to keep clean. Chairs designed for use here normally have either a padded seat with a wipe-able covering or a solid timber seat. In the case of the latter, it is desirable that the seat be shaped to allow for the buttocks to spread the weight evenly.

Another type of dining chair often found in kitchens is those for use at a breakfast bar or at worktop level. These are frequently made from metal as opposed to wood. This is mostly to combat the additional stresses caused by the extra height. Again there are a few things to look out for. They should have a support at that is situated at a comfortable height for your feet to rest on and, if they have a back, it should only be high enough to support the lumber region. Having a tall back on such seats makes it easy to tilt over backwards, especially when used by children.

When buying your dining chairs in flat pack form it is important to read the instructions carefully before assembly and use the correct tools. This will ensure that any fixings are tightened properly, resulting in a chair that is both longer-lasting and safer. Having fittings that are either too loose or too tight can result in premature failure of the furniture.
